An elephant calf was found dead in the hilly region of the newly-formed Eidgaon Upazila of Cox's Bazar today.

Forest officials of the Fulchhari Range recovered the dead elephant from the Gojalia area around noon, reports our Cox's staff correspondent quoting Anwar Hossain Sarkar, divisional forest officer of Cox's Bazar Forest Division (north).

"The elephant was male and aged between one and half years to two years," said Fulchhari Range Rajghat Forest Beat Officer Md Alauddin.

"A team from the livestock department conducted an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The corpse of the elephant was buried later," said DSO Anwar.

The mammal is categorized as critically endangered according to International Union for Conservation of Nature list due to its dwindling population.

Seven elephants were killed in just 11 days in this month in the Sherpur, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar districts.
