Cox Gazette May 23, 2021, 01:07 PM Saudi expat ‍‍`brutally tortured by in-laws‍‍` in Cox’s Bazar dies at CMCH

A Saudi expatriate, brutally tortured allegedly by his wife and in-laws in Sadar upazila of Cox's Bazar yesterday, died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital this noon.

Manjur Alam (45), son of late Abdul Goni of Cox's Bazar Chowfaldandi area, succumbed to his injures at CMCH around 12:30pm, said Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge of Eidgaon Police Station under the upazila.

OC Halim said Manjur was attacked by nine people, including his second wife Runa Akhter, father-in-law Nurul Azim and brother-in-law Mohammed Kayes, while entering his in-laws' house at Maijpara village around 7:30am yesterday.

They beat up Manjur with sticks and iron rods mercilessly for several hours, leaving him critically injured.

Later, locals took him to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital from where he was shifted to CMCH as his physical condition deteriorated, said the OC.

Superintendent of Cox's Bazar police asked the concerned police officials to arrest the people involved in the incident after a video of the torture went viral on social media, reports our Cox's Bazar staff correspondent.

The victim's elder brother filed a case against nine people with Eidgaon Police Station last night. Meanwhile, police arrested Manjur's wife Runa, father-in-law, mother-in-law and brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law over the murder.

Quoting the case statement, OC Halim further said Manjur came home from Saudi Arabia a few months ago. During his stay in Saudi Arabia, he regularly sent money to his wife Runa Akhtar. Runa used the money to buy a piece of land next to her ancestral house and constructed a building. After his return, there was a dispute between the couple over the money.

Due to this dispute, Runa along with her father, mother, brothers and sisters killed her husband, added the OC quoting the case statement.
