The Bangladesh government has decided to install CCTV cameras in the Rohingya camps of Cox’s Bazar to monitor camp activity around the clock.
Fences and 24 towers will be built around the camps very soon.
AKM Mozammel Haque, president of the Home Ministry’s law and order committee, disclosed the information at a press conference on Tuesday.
He said: “The Rohingyas are divided and fight among themselves. They are also engaged in the drug trade. There is international patronage of this and some non-governmental organizations are a medium for it.
“To keep such crimes in check, the Rohingya camps will soon have fences around them, 24 towers, and an adequate number of CCTV cameras will be installed.
“By these measures, their activities will be monitored 24 hours a day.”
The intelligence agencies of the country have been asked to submit comprehensive reports on NGOs that are behind these illicit activities.
“A small number of people in the Rohingya camps are involved in crime. They are involved in money laundering as well as drug dealing,” Mozammel said.
“However, drug smuggling is under control. But we want the situation to improve further,” the official added.
Bangladesh has a long border and some of these areas are inaccessible. Miscreants are using those places to sell drugs. Even some officials are in their pockets, said Mozammel.
Referring to people's representatives, he said leaders are getting involved in the drug business. Big businessmen in their greed are also getting involved.
Mozammel, also the Liberation War affairs minister, said: “Who are the patrons of drug dealers? The intelligence agencies have been asked to look into it so that they can be kept in check.
Talking about the effect of the coronavirus pandemic on the drug trade, the minister said people’s income sources have dried up and that is why many are leaning towards the drug trade.
“But law enforcement agencies have been able to keep the situation in control,” he added.
There are more than 700 foreign citizens whose visas have expired but they are still here. They are getting involved in various crimes including money laundering, Mozammel said.
“They’ll be detained and kept in a camp before they are returned to their respective countries. Those who cannot afford the trip will be deported on government money,” he added.
On attack on UNO Wahida and murder of Maj (retd) Sinha
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wahida Khanam was seriously injured in an attack by miscreants who broke into her official residence in Dinajpur’s Ghoraghat upazila, early Thursday.
Regarding the barbarous attack, the minister said he had directed intelligence agencies to find the “godfathers” behind the attacks. “Police have already been deployed at the UNO’s residence.”
About the murder of Major (retd) Sinha Md Rashed Khan in Cox's Bazar, Mozammel said the investigation is being carried out jointly and reports will be submitted on Tuesday. “We want the culprits to be punished severely.”
